There are many reasons why dentures don't look as nice as they should, but in the vast majority of cases with extensive loss of teeth and jaw bone, dentures can actually provide the best aesthetics. Why? Because the loss of bone height can easily to restored with thick pink acrylic. This may not be easy or possible with bridges.
When will a bridge look better than a denture? That happens when there are undercuts between front teeth. A denture that needs to be placed in and out of the mouth must have spaces to accommodate undercuts.Gaps will be obvious in such situations. In a bridge, the dentist can trimmed down the supporting teeth and rebuild them in such a way that there will be no gaps between the teeth. Under most circumstances, however, dentures look quite good.
![]() ![]() Just take a look at the picture on the left. The patient wore a denture that had very acceptable aesthetics. However, when we lifted up the denture, there were broken teeth underneath. Root canal, crowns, a bridge were indicated for this patient, but bear in mind that even though it's the right thing to do under these circumstances for the benefit of the patient's health and hygiene, it would be very challenging for the dentist to produce the same aesthetic results as that provided by the denture. Extractions and implants are cool, but implants in this area would be even more difficult to restore aesthetically than root canal treated broken teeth. Problems with denture aesthetics are usually caused by technical problems or patient insistence on a setup which is not really what they want. With the large numbers of foreign dental technicians filling our laborartories and cases being outsourced to labs overseas, the interpretation of the dentist's lab prescriptions may go wrong from time to time. This is a common problem which won't go away any time soon. Of course, problems with patient attitude are even more unsolvable. Some demanding patients make full use of the try in appointment to make as many changes to the denture as they can possibly think of (probably to get their money's worth). The changes may result in a denture that is much worse than what the dentist asked the lab to set up initially. Sadly, many of these patients do not accept responsibility for the final product. If only dentists can afford to reject and discharge all patients who show such attitudes. Please call 62358316 for appointments or email us or Be Our Facebook Fan |
