New Age Dentures For The New Age Patient
by Dr Chan Joon Yee

Even the most experienced or skilled dentist would shudder at the thought of seeing a demanding denture patient. Dentures are difficult. There is no doubt about it. The problem lies not only with design and structural limitations of dentures per se, but also with patient expectations.

Though most patients are reasonable enough not to expect dentures to function like real teeth (there are some who do nonetheless), it is important for denture wearers to understand that as they lose more and more teeth, their progressively larger dentures are are likely to feel worse and not better.

The main objectives of newagedentures.com are to 1) provide denture patients with a better understanding of the difficulties that dentists and technicians face when designing and constructing their dentures. 2) provide information on the new materials and techniques available to help overcome some of the problems that denture patients face.

Common Denture Complaints

1. Pain

Denture wearers may experience pain due to a multitude of factors. The most common reasons for pain are 1)undercuts and 2)bite issues. More ...

2. Looseness

When you want to fix a block of wood into another, you can use nails, screws or glue. The "tools" available to a dentist are far more sophisticated yet far less retentive. Dentures stay in the mouth with the help of clasps, seal, undercuts and coverage. More ...

3. Food Trap

This problem is often related to the issue of undercuts. Gaps in dentures are sometimes unavoidable due to severe undercuts. These gaps may trap food and cause bad breath or tooth decay.

4. Poor Aesthetics

It is not true that dentures look worse than bridges and implant restorations even though severe undercuts between front teeth may cause unavoidable gaps. In many cases where there is severe resorption, denture aesthetics can be superior to that of fixed prostheses. Given that the teeth are properly set up, this problem is usually due to the visibility of metal clasps. For this reason, many patients insist on dentures without metal clasps. But metal clasps serve an important function of holding and stabilising the denture. More ...

5. Weak Bite

This may not be a stand alone problem. Weak bite can be associated with looseness. But even for firm dentures, one cannot expect dentures to function like real teeth. It should be noted that different types of denture materials offer different biting and chewing capability. More ...

6. Tasteless Food

The larger the coverage of the denture, the smaller the area of the mouth in contact with the tongue. For this reason, many patients who do not understand denture limitations insist on small dentures. This affects stability and retention. More ...
